Test Structure
Since January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT has been a shorter, partly adaptive computer-based test. Allow about two hours in total, including directions; there is no scheduled break. You can take it at a test center or at home (TOEFL iBT Home Edition).

What Makes TOEFL Challenging
Despite its difficulty, the TOEFL accurately assesses the English level needed for academic success at US institutions. Each section and the overall score are reported on a 1–6 scale in half-band steps; during the transition period (2026–2027), score reports also show a comparable overall score on the familiar 0–120 scale.
Achieving a high score requires strong knowledge of the test structure, critical-thinking skills, the ability to understand academic texts and lectures at an advanced level, and the ability to analyze and summarize academic material quickly and accurately.
One of the most difficult aspects of the TOEFL is the strict time limit. Speaking tasks are short and strictly timed, so you must understand the question and respond right away. In addition to strong English skills, you must be able to think and respond rapidly under pressure.
