CUNY Placement Testing PreparationПодготовка к тестированию CUNY
To take credit-bearing courses at any of the City University of New York (CUNY) colleges, students must show proficiency in English and math. Most do so with their NYS Regents, SAT, or ACT scores; students who studied in another language take the ACCUPLACER ESL test after they are admitted, and some colleges give their own math placement tests.Чтобы учиться на курсах с кредитами в любом колледже City University of New York (CUNY),

At Lingva Pro, we prepare students for the tests CUNY actually gives in the 2026–27 academic year — ACCUPLACER ESL, the Ability to Benefit test, and college math placement exams — and help them reach the Regents and SAT scores that meet CUNY's benchmarks, so no placement test is needed.
How CUNY checks English and math
Any one of these scores meets the requirement for its subject. Without them, CUNY applies a proficiency index — a formula built from your high school GPA plus SAT and Regents scores, with separate cutoffs for English (65) and math (60). Students below the cutoff are placed into support courses; there is no admissions test to take instead.

Tests CUNY colleges give today
ACCUPLACER ESL
For applicants flagged as ESL — at least 6 months in a school where English was not the main language, or ESL classes in high school — who have no English Regents score or fall below the English index cutoff. It places you into ESL or college-level composition courses; a composite score of 105 or higher meets the English proficiency requirement.
Ability to Benefit (ATB)
For New York State residents with a foreign high school diploma who want to receive TAP and other state aid. It consists of three ACCUPLACER modules with passing scores of 233 in Reading, 235 in Writing, and 230 in Arithmetic. It does not affect admission or placement.
Math placement
Some colleges use ACCUPLACER math (QAS and AAF) or their own exams — Baruch and Queens College, for example — to place students who are already proficient into higher courses such as Precalculus or Calculus.
ACCUPLACER ESL: what is on the test
The test is computer-adaptive and taken in person at your college's testing office after you accept your offer of admission. It is generally taken once, and the result is shared across all CUNY colleges — which is why preparing beforehand matters.

Who should enroll
Applicants who studied in another language and will take ACCUPLACER ESL
High school students aiming for the Regents and SAT scores that meet CUNY's benchmarks
New York residents with a foreign diploma who need the ATB test for TAP
Proficient students who want to place into a higher math course
What CUNY does not require
There is no general CUNY admissions exam, and students cannot choose to take a placement test to prove proficiency. The SAT and ACT are optional for admission through spring 2027. TOEFL, IELTS, and Duolingo scores are used for admission only and do not meet the English proficiency requirement; placement tests taken outside CUNY are not accepted.
Our CUNY preparation program
We start with your records: which scores you already have, whether you will be flagged as ESL, and which college you plan to attend. Then we prepare you for exactly what applies to you — the WritePlacer ESL essay and the four ESL sections, the ATB modules, a college math placement exam, or the Regents and SAT scores that make testing unnecessary.
