Exam Components
The SHSAT moved to computers in fall 2025, and starting with the fall 2026 administration it is computer-adaptive. It is taken on NYC Public Schools computers and has 50 ELA and 50 Math questions in 180 minutes. You choose which section to start with and how to split your time. Question difficulty adjusts to your answers, and you cannot return to a question once you move on (except within an ELA passage set).
English Language Arts (ELA)
Reading comprehension passages and revising/editing questions that test grammar, usage, and writing clarity. Includes multiple-choice and technology-enhanced items.
Mathematics
Grade-level math: ratios and proportional relationships, the number system and expressions, equations and inequalities, statistics and probability, and geometry. Includes multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and technology-enhanced items.
Skills Tested
Both sections of the SHSAT demand more than basic knowledge. Students must demonstrate critical thinking, analytical reasoning, careful reading, and effective time management. Because the test is adaptive and you cannot go back, pacing matters: plan how to split your time between the sections, and if you are unsure of an answer, make your best guess and move on — there is no penalty for wrong answers.
