The current (enhanced) ACT has three core sections — English, Math, and Reading — with 131 questions in 2 hours 5 minutes. Science and Writing are optional add-ons. The test is offered online and on paper, so preparation should build both content mastery and pacing.

Scoring
English, Math, and Reading are each scored 1–36, and your Composite score is their average, rounded to the nearest whole number. If you take Science, you also receive a Science score and a STEM score (the average of Math and Science); neither affects the Composite. The optional Writing test is scored 2–12 and does not affect the Composite either. Some colleges require or accept Writing scores, so check each school's policy.
What Sets the ACT Apart
The ACT lets you choose whether to take Science — a section that tests data interpretation, scientific reasoning, and the evaluation of competing viewpoints. Students aiming for STEM programs can take it to earn a STEM score. Understanding how the ACT and SAT differ helps students choose the exam that best shows their strengths.
